Migrant inflows, capital outflows, growth and distribution: should we control capital rather than immigration?

Liberalization policies of international movements capital and labour have represented a crucial feature the so-called ‘globalization’ era. More recently, however, several restrictions on migratory been adopted to face alleged negative effects immigration. On contrary, free movement has almost always preserved. This paper aims verify whether this current framework economic policy can be justified in terms. We propose an unprecedented direct comparison between macroeconomic distributive impacts ‘extreme’ episodes net outflows migrant inflows OECD countries 1970 2017. Applying fixed-effects approach event-study approach, we show that GDP growth functional income distribution null or even positive statistical relationships with immigration, while they largely flights. specifically, extreme are not related some cases positively real growth, per capita wage share, negatively growth. These results contrast agendas seem suggest controls should concern rather than flows people.
